Walk a rooftop economizer

The damper can cool the building without the compressor — or kill capacity with the compressor running. Blade vs command first. Gauges last.

Still failing after this procedure?

How To stays open. Diagnose walks the next measurement.

Before you start

  • Roof work: fall protection, lock the disconnect, watch the curb opening.
  • Keep limbs out of the damper. Actuators move under 24V without warning.
  • Do not jump a smoke detector or fan-prove to ‘test’ the economizer.

On the truck

  • True RMS meter
  • Thermometer / probe for OA and mixed air
  • Flashlight for the hood linkage
  • The economizer module in THIS hood (W7220 / W7212 / Reliatel / Prodigy / factory FDD)

Steps

  1. 1 Identify the module in this hood

Read the controller that is actually mounted — Honeywell W7220 (FDD), W7212, a factory board, Reliatel, or Prodigy. Do not walk a split-system charge chart. Photograph the silk and the damper shaft.

Expect: Module identified. Linkage on the shaft.

If it fails: If there is no economizer, this unit is mechanical cool only — leave this how-to and prove Y1 at the contactor.

  2. 2 Blade vs command

Command a change (occupied min position, then a cool call with OA in the economizer window). Watch the actuator and the blades. Linkage slipped off the shaft is the weekly rooftop.

Expect: Blades move with command. Stuck open = overventilation and no compressor. Stuck closed = no free cooling.

If it fails: Repair actuator / linkage / min-position pot before you add gas.

  3. 3 OA, RA, mixed-air vs a real thermometer

Probe OA at the hood, RA in the return, MAT in the mixed-air stream. Compare to the module reading. A failed OA thermistor on a 95 °F roof makes the board think it can economize all day.

Expect: Sensors within a few degrees of the probe.

If it fails: Replace the lying sensor. Then see if Y1 actually starts the compressor.

  4. 4 DCV and minimum position

If CO2 / DCV is on, read the CO2 sensor in an empty space. Failed high drives the damper open and the compressor never runs. Minimum position is a setup, not a default of 40%.

Expect: CO2 reads room air. Min position as specified for this occupancy.

If it fails: Fix DCV / min position. High bills with a cold mixed-air duct are this, not a scroll.

  5. 5 Name the FDD class

Title 24 FDD on JADE / factory modules: (1) OA / RA / MAT sensor fail, (2) not economizing when it should, (3) economizing when it should not, (4) damper not modulating, (5) excess outdoor air. CO2 failed high is excess OA. ACT RANGE is linkage or the feedback pot.

Expect: One FDD class named. Sensor or damper proven with a number.

If it fails: If the module has no FDD, still walk blade vs command and the three sensors — the physics does not change.

  6. 6 Then mechanical cool

When OA is not in the economizer window, Y1 at the unit board must pull the contactor. 24 VAC at the coil, 3-phase rotation, HPS/LPS, then pressures on THIS rooftop plate.

Expect: Compressor runs only when the board commands mechanical cool.

If it fails: Load the rooftop plate (48FC, YSC, LGH, GPG16…) in Diagnose and walk that controller.

Field notes

  • Title 24 FDD classes are public code language. The sticker / LCD in THIS hood is the book for that revision.
  • Type the live JADE string in Diagnose. Examples: MA SENS ERR, OA SENS ERR, CO2 SENS ERR, ACT ERROR, FREEZING.
  • Packaged rooftop: one nameplate. Do not pick a split furnace + condenser for this call.
