Change a run capacitor
Prove 0 VAC, discharge it, match µF, terminals up. A weak cap cooks compressors. A screwdriver spark on A2L is the wrong habit.
Before you start
- Pull the disconnect. Prove 0 VAC L1–L2, L1–ground, L2–ground with a meter you just tested on a known live source.
- Discharge HERM and FAN to C with a resistor-style discharger before you touch the spades. HVACR School on A2L: always use a proper discharger — a spark is an ignition source.
- Single-phase 240 has two hots. One pulled fuse does not make the compressor safe.
- Do not under-load-test a blower capacitor with clamp leads next to a spinning wheel.
On the truck
- Meter that reads µF, VAC, and clamp amps
- Capacitor discharger (required habit on A2L — not a screwdriver)
- Phone camera for the wire photo
- Replacement can: same µF, equal or higher VAC
- Needle-nose to snug spades, extra strap if the can is a different diameter
Steps
1 Look, then measure — do not guess from a hum
Bulged top or oil leak = failed, replace, do not measure. Rust alone is not a fail. Photograph C / HERM / FAN. If the unit still runs, HVACR School under-load test: µF = (start-wire amps × 2652) ÷ volts across that section. If it is more than about 10% low, replace. Bench µF with power off and the can discharged if it will not run.
Expect: A number vs the side-stamp. Dual can: HERM–C, FAN–C, and HERM–FAN ≈ the sum.
If it fails: A can that ‘runs the fan backwards / slow’ is already failed. Replace it. Do not leave −15%.
2 Kill power, prove it, discharge, then pull the can
Disconnect out. 0 VAC. Discharge. Pull the wires. Pull the strap. Do not let a stray lead tap a hot lug if you skipped the voltage check.
Expect: Can in your hand. Photo on the phone. Panel still dead.
If it fails: Any voltage → stop and find the second source (heat kit, crankcase heater, mislanded whip).
3 Same µF, terminals up, bench-test the new one first
Match microfarads exactly. VAC equal or greater. HVACR School: bench-test the new can before it goes in. Mount upright, terminals up. Resize the strap — do not run a self-tapper into the coil. Snug the spades (light squeeze if they are loose). C is common, HERM is compressor, FAN is the OD fan. They are not interchangeable.
Expect: New can reads on-stamp on the bench. Wires on the correct lugs. Strap tight, can vertical.
If it fails: A new can that benches 20% low is a bad box. Do not install it.
4 Run it and confirm amps
Restore power. Compressor and fan should start clean. Amp both vs the nameplate. A fan that still hums with a good cap is the motor. A compressor that still will not start is windings, a bad contactor face, or low voltage — not a second capacitor.
Expect: Clean start. Amps in range. Can not hot after a few minutes.
If it fails: Repeat fail in a week → voltage, tight fan bearings, or a dying compressor. The cap may have been the victim.
Field notes
- A failed cap takes out motors more often than a failed motor takes out caps.
- You may use a higher VAC rating. Never a different µF ‘because it was on the truck.’
- Hard-start kits are a different part. Do not confuse a potential relay / start cap with the dual run can.
