Carrier code 32 — which 32 you have

Furnace 32 is draft (usually low-fire). Outdoor 32 is a suction pressure switch. Comfort 96 may use 32 as the only PS. Infinity modulating does not have a 32 to replace. A 3 1.6 CFM readout is not 32.

Before you start

  • Do not jumper a furnace draft switch to clear 32. Prove it, then remove the jumper.
  • Outdoor 32 (LPS) with a jumped switch hides a leak or a frozen coil.

On the truck

  • Rating plate — furnace vs outdoor vs Infinity
  • Live two-digit or outdoor status, still powered
  • Count of pressure switches / hoses

Steps

  1. 1 Name the box — indoor IFC vs outdoor control vs CFM

    Two-digit on a gas furnace IFC = indoor draft path. Status 32 on a heat pump / AC control = low-pressure (suction) switch — charge, airflow, ice, TXV — not a trap. Steady 3 1.6 on 59TP6 / 926T = stage + 1,600 CFM, not code 32. Photograph before you pull power.

    Expect: Furnace IFC, outdoor control, or CFM readout named.

    If it fails: Rooftop IGC 3-flash is not 32. Goodman 3-flash is not 32.

  2. 2 Furnace 32 by sister — count the hoses

    59TP6 / 926T / 59TN6 (two hoses): 32 is LOW-FIRE PS. Low inducer, low hose only. High-fire hose will not close on low speed. 59SC5 / 915S (one hose): if the door lists 32, it is the ONLY draft switch — same job as 31, not a missing high-fire. 59MN7 / 987M: there is no discrete 32. Pressure is a BAND (31/42). Ordering a low-fire switch for a modulator is the wrong bag.

    Expect: One hose, two hoses, or no switch (band) before parts.

    If it fails: 31 on two-stage is often the active-stage / high path. Fix 32 first if both store — low fire has to prove before a fair 34 ignition test.

  3. 3 Then the draft that 32 is witnessing

    96% (TP6, SC5, TN6): trap, collector, PVC slope, attic ice, intake wind. 80% metal: chimney — 32/31 there is not a drowned collector. Ohm the named switch only after inducer is actually at the speed that 32 belongs to. See pressure-switch testing.

    Expect: Vent family + correct hose + spinning inducer.

    If it fails: Outdoor 32: indoor airflow and ice first, then charge. Do not add gas because a furnace 32 is on the invoice.

Field notes

  • Bryant 926T = 59TP6 32. Bryant 915S = 59SC5 32-as-only. Bryant 986T = 59TN6 32 low-fire. Bryant 987M = no 32.
  • Carrier outdoor 31 is often HPS; outdoor 32 is LPS. Indoor 31/32 are not those switches.
  • Type 59TP6 32 or 59MN7 32 in Diagnose — the modulator path will tell you to stop hunting a switch.
