Braze copper with nitrogen
Purge first, then a whisper of flow. POE oil will strip the oxide you leave inside the pipe and park it in the TXV.
Before you start
- Never braze a charged system. Recover first. A2L plus a torch is an ignition event, not a ‘small leak, I’ll be quick.’
- Never pressure-test or purge with oxygen or compressed air. Nitrogen only.
- Pull Schrader cores before you flow. A core in place traps pressure and melts the core.
- Watch the far side of the line, the wall, and the insulation. Have a wet rag and an extinguisher in reach.
On the truck
- Oxy-acetylene or the OEM-allowed torch
- Nitrogen cylinder + flow regulator that reads SCFH (not just PSI)
- 15% silver (BCuP-5 / Stay-Silv 15 class) for copper-to-copper
- Sand cloth, deburring tool, wet rag / heat sink
- Eye and leather PPE, fire extinguisher, burn permit if the site needs it
Steps
1 Recover, isolate, and prep the joint
Recover to the required vacuum. Cut square, deburr inside and out, clean to bright copper. Dry-fit. On a TXV, service valve, or schrader boss, clamp a wet rag / heat sink. A2L work: confirm the circuit is empty and ventilated before the torch lights.
Expect: No refrigerant pressure. Bright metal. Cores out.
If it fails: Any residual pressure → recover again. Do not ‘bleed it off.’
2 Purge, then flow 3–5 SCFH
HVACR School: purge (chase air) at a higher flow — typically 20–100 SCFH — until nitrogen is leaving the open end. Then drop to a flow of 3–5 SCFH (a whisper) for the braze. Purge is not pressurize. You are displacing oxygen, not inflating the line.
Expect: Soft nitrogen leaving the far end the whole time the flame is on the pipe.
If it fails: No flow = oxides. Too much flow = the filler blows out of the cup and you anneal a pinhole.
3 Heat the pipe, feed the cup, let it cool in nitrogen
Bring both pieces up together. Copper-to-copper BCuP is self-fluxing on clean copper — do not dump paste inside the tube. Feed the rod so capillary pulls it around the joint. Pull the heat. Keep the nitrogen flowing while it cools. Do not quench with water — that stresses the joint and the valve you just saved.
Expect: Even filler around the cup. No grey/black scale inside when you look in an open end.
If it fails: Black flakes inside = you brazed in air. Cut it out and redo with flow. A dull, piled bead = cold joint.
4 Pressure-test the new joints before you evacuate
Reinstall cores or cap the tools. Nitrogen standing test (see that how-to). Soap the new joints. Then evacuate and charge. A2L: inert purge of the finished lines is required practice, not optional.
Expect: Standing nitrogen holds. New joints dry under bubbles / electronic.
If it fails: A falling gauge is a leak. Find it now. Vacuum will not ‘suck it shut.’
Field notes
- Why nitrogen matters more on 410A / R-32 / R-454B: POE strips cupric oxide and carries it to the metering device.
- Swaged copper is thinner at the bulb — it comes to temp faster. Do not cook it.
- Stay off the flame on a charged A2L ‘just to loosen a nut.’ Recover.
